In the process of creating this map I have acquired a number of rare historic maps - both on paper and digitally. For instance, I paid $120 for an old 1922 CNR Rail map of Algonquin Park.

I think it's really important that these files be shared with everyone who wants them because of their fragility; many of these maps are quite rare now and are almost impossible to acquire. As soon as a single person makes an effort to scan and share one of these old maps then they become accessable and are preserved indefinately.

Since I use a lot of data from historic maps on my map it's of real value for me to encourage the scanning of these maps. In some cases I have been able to scan these older maps, but in some other cases I don't have physical access to the records or the institutions don't have wide-format scanners available.

Many institutions that don't have scanners for public use (ie Archives of Ontario,) will digitize the maps for you - for a fee. I can afford to pay for some of these, but not every single one, so here's my idea. If individuals are willing to pay for the digitization of one of these files, I'll host them, share the files with others and will integrate the contained data into my map. I'll give you a small credit on the site, and you'll have a warm fuzzy feeling inside.
